HARRISONBURG, VA (Rocktown Now) — Temperatures will remain near, or even slightly below, seasonal averages over the next few days. High pressure will dominate the weather pattern, bringing plenty of sunshine by day and clear, star-filled skies at night through the upcoming weekend.Adding to the night sky, the Full Buck Moon will light up the sky for the next several evenings. Although the moon reaches its official peak at 10:35 a.m. today, it will still appear full and bright overnight through Thursday, providing excellent viewing conditions.

So why is it called the Buck Moon?
The name comes from the time of year when male deer, or bucks, begin growing their new velvet-covered antlers—a striking sign of midsummer growth and renewal. For generations, Native American, colonial, and European traditions have used this full moon as a seasonal marker. As it rises near sunset, the Buck Moon often takes on a large, golden appearance, creating a beautiful sight for skywatchers. In some years, it also coincides with active summer meteor showers, making it one of the most anticipated full moons of the year.
