Crews battling Elizabeth Furnace Fire in George Washington National Forest

SHENANDOAH COUNTY, Va. (ROCKTOWN NOW) – The US Forest Service is working to address the Elizabeth Furnace fire located on the northern region of the George Washington National Forest.

The fire is currently estimated at 30 acres and is being monitored by two helicopters.

Because of that, a number of areas are closed under a temporary order for the public’s safety, including Elizabeth Furnace Day Use Area, Buzzard Rock Trailhead Parking lot, Trail No. 408, which is Massanutten Mountain from Elizabeth Furnace to Veach Gap.

Officials ask the public to avoid areas with active fire and smoke for their safety and to give fire personnel room to address the situation.
