FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (BC Athletics) – The Bridgewater College field hockey team dropped its season opener at Mary Washington on Tuesday, 2-0.

Score: Mary Washington 2, Bridgewater 0
Records: Bridgewater 0-1, Mary Washington 1-0

How It Happened
• Bridgewater jumped on the front foot as Lexi Francis rifled the game’s first shot two minutes in, but it was turned aside. BC earned a penalty corner off the scoring chance, but Mary Washington fended off the chance. UMW registered its first shot of the night in the fifth minute, but Rachel Adle slammed the door shut for Bridgewater in net. The home team earned a pair of penalty corners a few moments later, but did not cash in. Mary Washington kept the field tilted through the end of the frame and rifled a pair of shots, with one turned away by Adel to keep it scoreless after the opening period.
• Mary Washington cashed in on the first chance of the second quarter. Five minutes in, Adel made a save on UMW’s first chance, but the rebound was buried by the home team to make it 1-0. Adel tallied another save for BC with six minutes to go in the period. The home side added to the lead before the horn as a cross from the left side of the box found Carns’ stick and she buried it to make it 2-0 heading to the intermission.
• UMW stayed on the attack to open the second half. Thaleia Khader made a trio of saves during the stanza, and her mates used the stops as momentum. After a UMW green card, BC had a great look on a penalty corner as Kiley Parker found Emily Dickinson, and her shot was swatted away to keep it a two-goal Mary Washington advantage after three quarters.
• Francis kept the Bridgewater offense alive as she fired a shot on frame but Winans made the stop for Mary Washington. A player up, Mary Washington looked to add to the lead late in the frame. UMW missed its first shot wide, but Khader put on a clinic as she stopped four shots over the final two minutes to send the game to a 2-0 final score.

Game Notes
• Francis led BC with a pair of shots on goal. Khader made eight saves for Bridgewater in the cage as she did not allow a goal in the second half. Adel made four stops and allowed the two goals in the opening 30 minutes.
• Reed and Carns had the goals for Mary Washington. Winans made three saves on the three shots she faced.
• Mary Washington held a 16-3 edge in shots and a 6-2 edge in penalty corners.
