FISHERSVILLE, VIRGINIA – (Rocktown Now) – Augusta Health has finalized its acquisition of Harrisonburg Family Practice, a long-standing primary care practice that has served the Harrisonburg community for five decades.

The move expands Augusta Health’s primary care footprint in Harrisonburg and strengthens its network of healthcare services across the Shenandoah Valley.

Founded by Drs. George Weidig and David Whitehead, Harrisonburg Family Practice operates from its office at 1831 Reservoir Street and includes seven physicians providing family medicine for patients of all ages. The practice also offers laboratory services, women’s healthcare, in-office procedures, and Saturday office hours.

“We are pleased to welcome Harrisonburg Family Practice to Augusta Health,” said Kris Doan, senior vice president of Augusta Health and president of Augusta Medical Group. “The practice has a long history of providing trusted, patient-centered care in the Harrisonburg community. We look forward to building on that legacy and creating more opportunities to connect patients and families with the care and services they need.”

Officials said the practice will continue operating under its current name and remain at its current location during the transition. Patients will continue seeing the same physicians and care team, and phone numbers and services will remain unchanged.

The integration into Augusta Medical Group is expected to be completed by June 2027. Augusta Health says its immediate focus is maintaining continuity of care while supporting physicians and staff throughout the transition.

Dr. J. Michael Syptak, who has practiced at Harrisonburg Family Practice since 1999, said the partnership positions the practice for continued growth while preserving its commitment to patient care.

“We are excited about this next chapter and the opportunities it brings for our practice and the patients we serve,” Syptak said. “Our commitment to providing compassionate, high-quality care remains at the heart of everything we do.”

Once fully integrated, Harrisonburg Family Practice will have greater access to Augusta Health’s network of primary and specialty care services. Health system leaders say the acquisition aligns with their mission to improve access to care while building on the trusted relationships Harrisonburg Family Practice has established with generations of local families.

The acquisition marks a significant milestone for one of Harrisonburg’s longest-serving family medicine practices as it enters a new era under the Augusta Health banner.
