ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, Va. (ROCKINGHAM COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS) – Caroline Sanders, a physical education teacher at John Wayland Elementary School (JWES), is taking her athletic abilities to the international stage.

She is traveling to Spain to compete in the World Triathlon Championships, where she will race in the Age Group Sprint Triathlon on Thursday, October 17.

Last year in Milwaukee, Wi., she began her journey to this prestigious event, where she qualified at the Nationals with a #5 ranking in her age group. This accomplishment leads her to represent the United States among the world’s top triathletes.

On Friday, the JWES community celebrated Sanders’ dedication to her sport. In her honor, students and staff walked a lap around the school grounds, cheering her on and wishing her luck in Spain.

“It’s hard to comprehend that a world-class athlete is my co-teacher,” said Mr. Eby, another JWES physical education teacher. “But as you get to know Mrs. Sanders (Caroline), you can quickly learn why she is with her passion, commitment, and dedication to being one of the best in the world. It means early mornings, late nights, and pushing through physical and mental barriers.”

Students are excited and inspired by Sanders’ achievements.

“Personally, I think it is crazy,” said Luke W., a 5th-grade student. “I knew she was good, but not that good. Even if she got last place, it would still be quite the accomplishment.”

Another student, Brian A., added, “Now I think I am the best because my PE teacher is one of the best.”

The school community is rooting for Sanders as she heads to Spain, eager to see her represent their hometown on a global stage. Her dedication to both her students and athletic career inspires all, and JWES couldn’t be prouder. Best of luck, Mrs. Sanders!
