RICHMOND, Va. (JMU Athletics) – In the first midweek game of the season, James Madison baseball fell to Richmond, 9-5, on Wednesday afternoon at Pitt Field.

The Dukes dropped to 0-3 while the Spiders improved to 3-2.

Redshirt sophomore Clay Thompson (2-for-4) and sophomore Reece Moody (2-for-5) both led the Dukes at the plate, each recording a run scored and a double with Moody adding two RBI. Junior Josiah Seguin also reached four times via a single and three walks.

How It Happened
Second Inning
A two-run homer gave Richmond the first lead of the game.

Third Inning
The Spiders doubled their lead with a single and a walk, both with the bases loaded, to lead 4-0.

Fifth Inning
JMU manufactured a run to get on the board, as Thompson led off the inning with a single. He then stole second, moved to third on a bunt and was knocked in on a sacrifice fly off the bat of junior Kyle Langley to make it 4-1.

Back-to-back doubles from UR in the home half of the inning was the response, scoring three runs from the two hits to push the score to 7-1.

Sixth Inning
UR connected on a 444-foot home run to add a run, leading 8-1.

Seventh Inning
Back-to-back-to-back doubles cut the JMU deficit to three runs, after a leadoff single and a walk put two on with one out. Junior Ike Schmidly doubled in freshman Cameron Aycock, before Moody would knock in Seguin and Schmidly. Freshman Keegan Haesler traded spots with Moody to cap the scoring off and make the score 8-5.

Eighth Inning
A fielder’s choice made the score 9-5 for the hosts.

Game Notes
• Josiah Seguin stole two bases to tie his career high. It is the most bases he has stolen at the NCAA level, having set his career-high in stolen bases at Chipola College.
• JMU had its four-game win streak at Richmond snapped, falling at the home of the Spiders for the first time since March 29, 2016.
• The pitching staff for the Dukes recorded 15 strikeouts, the most since Feb. 21 last season against Canisius (17).

Up Next
The Dukes will play at Veterans Memorial Park for the first time when they host Le Moyne on Feb. 20-22. Game one of the three-game set is scheduled for 3 p.m.
