STRASBURG, Va. – At the request of Strasburg Police, the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation Culpeper Field Office is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Strasburg.

State Police Sergeant Brent Coffey reported that the incident began Sunday at around 11 pm when the Shenandoah County Emergency Communication Center received a 911 call about an individual acting erratically, damaging property, and threatening people inside a hotel located on Signal Knob Drive.

When an officer from the Strasburg Police Department arrived on the scene he encountered the suspect, who was a woman in the rear parking lot of the hotel.

An altercation ensued as the woman attacked the officer and gained control of the officer’s baton and used it to strike the officer in the head.

The officer then discharged his firearm and struck the woman, who was taken to Winchester Medical Center, where she died a short time later.

Her body was taken to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Manassas for positive identification, examination, and autopsy.

The officer was transported to the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and has since been released. No other law enforcement officers or citizens were injured in the incident.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
