HARRISONBURG, Va. — A new documentary sheds light on the details behind an eye-opening accident two-and-a-half-years ago that could have killed a Friendly City firefighter.

The 17-minute film by the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation tells the story of how Josh Holloway tumbled out of a Harrisonburg fire engine that was responding to a call in November of 2020. The young firefighter was not buckled into his safety apparatus, and was thrown onto the pavement as the vehicle made a sharp right turn from Maryland Avenue onto South High Street.

Luckily, Holloway – the son of Rockingham County fire chief Jeremy Holloway – was uninjured. However, he said the incident was a wake-up call about using proper safety restraints.

The short film also features interviews with Harrisonburg Fire Chief Matt Tobia, who discusses policies implemented by department leadership at the time that may have led to the accident.
