RICHMOND, Va. — The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality says that despite last week’s rainfall, most of the commonwealth is under some type of drought advisory.
In a Monday release, the agency said that 55 of Virginia’s 95 counties are now under a drought watch – an increase of 13 counties from the last report.
The worst of the drought is still here in the Valley, where Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren, and Clarke counties remain under a drought warning advisory.
D-E-Q says that while the recent rains were helpful in the short term, there wasn’t enough to trim deficits in soil moisture, groundwater levels and streamflow.
The agency calculates that Valley streams and rivers are currently flowing at less five percent of their normal volume.
