Lawnstarter.com, which is (as far as I can tell) a lawncare/gardening tips website had a study looking into the Best Cities for Naked Biking for 2023.
Immediately after reading the headline, I had questions. Here they are in no particular order:
Did they actually spend money to find out the best place to bicycle naked in the United States?
Did they use the Police Blotters or Twitter feed to determine part of their statistics? You know, reading something like “Officers were called to the 400 block of Stark Butte Lane regarding a sighting of a naked guy on a bike…”
Are their naked bicycle riding clubs? I know of a few riding groups and trail rider groups in the area, but no nude ones.
As for the “regular” bicycling enthusiast clubs, do you think they may have a “clothing optional” ride on their calendars?
Why does a gardening website care about naked bicycle riding?
Then I went down the rabbit hole of the website and found “The Best Cities for Naked Gardening.” Miami, Florida, Austin, Texas, and Atlanta, Georgia are the top three U.S. cities in that category, by the way. And Orlando, Florida makes both lists for number of practicing nudists. But that’s a whole other set of questions.
As for the top three for naked biking the accolades go to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Portland, Oregon, and Seattle, Washington. Of the 200 cities on the naked biking list, I was born in one, have visited eight others, and currently have either family or friends in three. And knowing my family and friends, they probably have something to do with this list—or at least the police blotter hypothesis.
I’m now wondering if by “naked” they are referring to the “without accoutrement” way of thinking…when you “run naked” you run without gear—phone, timers, gadgets, etc. But, no, I’m sticking with the idea that they are, in fact, talking about riding a bicycle while garmently challenged. Next time, I’ll read the whole article just to be sure.
