ORLANDO – Former James Madison quarterback Todd Centeio has signed his first professional contract, joining the Orlando Guardians of the XFL, the league announced.

Centeio transferred to JMU for his final season in 2022 and made an immediate impact, starting 10 games for the Dukes.

The 2022-23 JMU Male Athlete of the Year threw for 2,697 yards and 25 touchdowns with just five interceptions while producing 393 rushing yards and seven more touchdowns, accounting for 3,090 yards and 32 total touchdowns.

The West Palm Beach, Fla., native ranked top-10 in JMU single-season history in five categories, including sixth in passing touchdown, seventh in both passing yards and total offense and 10th in both completions (181) and pass attempts (284).

Centeio was voted 2022 Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year and was later named Virginia Sports Information Directors State Offensive Player of the Year. During his senior campaign, he was tabbed to the midseason watch lists for the Maxwell Award, Manning Award and CFPA National Performer of the Year while being selected to the Davey O’Brien QB Class of 2022.

He is the second 2022 senior to sign with the XFL, joining defensive lineman Jamare Edwards, who was drafted by the Vegas Vipers during the XFL Rookie Draft earlier in June.
